A Cloudy Tale

This is a tale about clouds. It is a picture story of different kinds of clouds passing by, each with a lilting poetic verse describing what is happening. The bright blue sky is quiet and still. Then it starts to be filled! First come the horsetails, wispy and frail. Next come ones all fluffy and round. They build and grow and with thunder do sound! They rattle our windows. Their lightning does flash. They send down rain that hits with a splash. Then they pass on, and quiet ensues. And then quiet life can begin to resume. With a thunderstorm progressing through the town, this story shows the progress from its beginning to its end. This shows each stage of a developing and passing thunderstorm with photographs that children can easily see. This knowledgeable book will help those who fear these storms to be less scared and help those become more interested in natural occurrences.

My Maple Tree

My Maple Tree takes the reader through the changes a maple tree makes throughout the four seasons. This is the story of the life cycle of a maple tree. In the spring, a maple tree seed sprouts, takes root, and then reaches its sapling toward the sky. The sapling grows through the summer and eventually becomes a mature tree with a full canopy of green leaves. In the autumn, the maple tree’s leaves become brilliant scarlet, and soon begin to fall. The tree is bare in the winter snow, but revives the next spring as it brings forth new green leaves and then seeds to begin the life of new maple trees. The book illustrates these changes in the life of the maple tree using actual colored photographs and rhyme narrative that speaks to what is being shown in each photograph. My Maple Tree can easily be paired with other books about other kinds of trees or plants, as well as books about persons who have interacted with trees. Kevin wrote this book about a maple tree in the yard of his home. The tree started when a seed fell into a flowerpot on his daughter’s balcony. Soon, the seed sprouted and grew into a small sapling. Kevin and his daughter took the sapling and transplanted it to Kevin’s front yard where they nurtured it and helped it grow into a strong small tree. Years later, the tree had grown large and provided wonderful shade for the house, and showered the area with its own seeds to populate the area with even more maple trees that everyone could enjoy.

The Legend of the Sacred Wood

The Legend of the Sacred Wood is a Christian-themed historical fiction about an old-line extended family of craftsmen, particularly woodworkers, who seek a place to live where they can practice their faith in peace and honor God. The story is loosely based on the early persecutions of Catholics in England under the rule of King Henry VIII and the resulting immigration of people to the New World. The family in the story helps establish a colony in the New World, and after some years the authorities from the Old World arrive and begin persecutions once again. The story tells of the family’s struggles and successes as they move westward into the wilderness to establish homesteads where they can live their lives according to their faith in obedience to God and in harmony with the world He created. Throughout, they explain why the wood that is at the center of their livelihood is sacred.

The Tree and the Stones

This is a story of how something seemingly insignificant and unworthy can end up having a role larger than life. It is told from the perspective of the tree that became the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. The cedar tree was growing alone atop a stone ridge, constantly belittled by the large stones surrounding it and told how uselessness it was compared to the stones’ more enduring strengths. The tree’s life was upended the day a special man came and prayed beneath the tree’s shade and spoke to large crowds of people. Soon after, the tree found itself being cut down and dragged into town where it was hewn into beams. The tree did not understand why any of that was happening and worried about what was to become of it. The men used the beams to make the cross upon which the special man was nailed. Because of what that man had done and the tree’s role in his final hours, the tree’s life had now become far more important and enduring than that of any stone.

NOTE:  The illustrations in this book include some showing Jesus after the scourging. The author encourages parents to read this book with their children.
