This monograph was a report on a year-long study of public schools in the state of Illinois that had been specially funded by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to enhance their science programs. The report included information about the state of inquiry science instruction in the schools, resources available to those schools, teacher and school demographics, and other statistical information relevant to ongoing science education reform efforts within the state. This monograph was first year study commissioned by the ISBE.

Every few years, the Illinois Corn Board of the Illinois Corn Growers Association commissions a monograph, or informational booklet, about corn. The booklets are specifically designed for middle school and secondary school use, in both agricultural and science classes. In 1990, the booklet targeted how corn grows, how it is grown in the state, and how it is used. The booklet included suggested research and class activities that teachers could utilize in teaching about corn.
